JÄMI FLY IN INTRODUCTION

The traditional Jämi Fly In will take place at Jämijärvi Airfield (EFJM) between July 9 and July 11, 2010.

This annual event started as experimental days where aircraft builders came together each year in order to give an award to "the Builder of the Year". Since then this event has evolved into a much larger and more versatile aviation happening which attracts whole families from all around Finland and abroad as well.

In 2010, it´s been 75 years since Jämi Airfield was established and the very first airshow organized. This calls for a big celebration which will be highlighted on July 10 and 11 with the 75th Anniversary Jämi Airshow!

In 2009, the program included experimental days, airshows on both days, and also RC Freestyle and Finnish Jet Open model airplane competitions. Over the weekend we paid homage to the 90 years old Finnish Aeronautical Association (SIL/FAA). There were 149 aircraft of all kinds present, which was an all-time record for Jämi Fly In. As many as 58 performers took part in the flight displays. There was an amazing age difference between the youngest and the oldest participant: no fewer than 81 years! The number of spectators was actually greater than the number of inhabitants in Jämijärvi municipality. Kaarlo "Kalle" Rajala was crowned "Builder of the Year" for 2009 for his Golden Hawk F172H OH-CGI.

In 2008, awards were once again handed out to experimental aircraft builders and an aeronautical exhibition was arranged inside Jämi Areena and partly outdoors as well. The Finnish Aeronautical Association´s master airshow for 2008 was held at the same time at Jämi with the participation of Finnish Air Force aircraft. Jarmo Hakala won "the Builder of the Year" award with his PIK-25 "Varttimarkka" ("Quarter of a buck").

In 2007, the whole weekend was reserved for the event. In addition to the two Jämijärvi runways, the highway strip on the nearby Highway 23, normally reserved for emergency landings only, was available for operations. Finland´s biggest flying museum piece, the historic Douglas DC-3 aircraft operated by DC-Association, based in Helsinki-Malmi, landed and took off from there as well. Attendance reached an amazing 9000 spectators and 120 aircraft were present during the weekend. Unfavorable weather to the north and east unfortunately prevented more aircraft from arriving. Raimo Toivio was "the Builder of the Year". His aircraft is an Europa XS Monowheel.
